NIUS Physics Workshop for College Teachers on Central Forces

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) is a National Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. The broad goals of the centre are to promote equity and excellence in science and mathematics education from primary school to undergraduate college level. The National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS) is a major programme of HBCSE aimed at enhancing the quality of undergraduate science education in India.

HBCSE announces a NIUS Physics Workshop for the teachers.

Topic

 Central Forces in classical mechanics

Date and Venue

Dates: February 28 to March 3, 2017

Venue: Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR), Mumbai

Content of the workshop

Lecture sessions interspersed with tutorial sessions. The main focus will be on common misconceptions, difficulties in understanding subtle points and problem solving. Topics covered will include:

  • Concept of force, energy and work with vectorial formulation

  • Central forces, conservation laws, classification of orbits

  • Kepler's laws, orbital dynamics

  • Some advanced topics (stability of orbits, hyperbolic orbits etc.)

Who can apply

College/University physics teachers actively teaching physics at Bsc/Msc level only. Students and high school teachers need not apply.

Prerequisites to participation are basic textbook knowledge of the topic and reasonable fluency in high school level algebra, geometry and calculus.

How to apply
